CPAC Day 2: Leader Boehner, Senator Demint and others
CPAC Day 2:
This morning members of the University of Georgia College Republicans rose early to hear from our leaders from the US Congress and the US Senate. Senator John Cornyn(R-TX), chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, talked about how we can gain more seats in the US Senate while sticking to the principles that we value so highly. For an 8AM appearance he had the ballroom excited and motivated to work even harder over the next two years.
Next Senator Jim Demint(R-SC) addressed the largest CPAC crowd in the conference’s history. Senator Demint talked about the importance of freedom in America in terms of the economy, the market and our lives. He received many standings ovations for serving as a crusader against earmarks, pork barrel spending and theft from future generations.
Many of our members were especially excited to hear from House Minority Leader John Boehner(R-OH). Leader Boehner talked about his humble roots and the path to lead him to the highest leadership position in the house. Boehner’s dabble into public service began on his neighborhood association. He began to notice that the opportunities for Americans were quickly disappearing. The leader said that his job is not to be a Congressman, but to keep opportunities available for all Americans.
The theme of his speech was that “the economic freedom that we enjoy is under assault.” Leader Boehner received a standing and extended ovation when discussing how he fought to make sure that Republicans in the house stuck to their conservative principles. While the Republicans standing strong in the House was not enough to stop the bill, Leader Boehner said “I assure you that you will know how every dollar of this bill will be spent.”
Leader Boehner is a man who sticks to his principles and is role model for rising conservative leaders. He has never asked for an earmark and will never ask for a earmark.
Earlier this week the Administration released the Omnibus Bill, Boehner said, which included money for blueberry research and other pet projects, but cut funding for the DC charter school scholarships. This program allows schoolchildren in Washington, DC who attend struggling schools to attend other public or private schools. Boehner noted, ” The Day after President Obama talked about Hope, Speaker Pelosi took away hope from 1000s of DC schoolchildren.”
At CPAC this week there has been many conversations, panels and informal discussion on how Republicans can win in 2010 and 2012, but Leader Boehner really hit home with his analysis
“To win in 2010 we have to be the party of new solutions…we need to explore new ways to connect with the grassroots and new supporters..To win we have to be the party of new solutions.”
